The Tamang people, an indigenous ethnic group spread across the Himalayan region, are now predominantly inhabitants of Nepal. As proud descendants of our esteemed ancestors, the Tamang community possesses a rich and distinct cultural heritage, deeply rooted in our language, script, folklore, music, and a unique blend of traditional Tamang Buddhism, Bön, and Shamanism (Tambaism).
Following the legacy of our forebears, we take immense pride in our cultural expressions, particularly the Tamang songs and the melodies of the Damphu and Tungna, which originate from the Tamba tradition and remain an inseparable part of our identity.
Historically, Tamang people have endured systemic discrimination at the hands of aristocratic elites in Nepal, resulting in widespread economic deprivation and social marginalization. For generations, they have been subjected to exploitation within Nepalese society. However, despite persistent oppression and discrimination, the Tamang people have remained resilient, continuously striving to preserve and uphold their unique cultural heritage and traditions.
Recognizing the need for collective efforts to safeguard our identity, Tamang Society of America, Inc. was established in March 2002 as a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of the State of New York. The primary mission of this organization is to preserve Tamang culture and heritage while fostering mutual cooperation among Tamang individuals residing in the United States and abroad.
The Society actively seeks collaboration with individuals and organizations worldwide that uphold and respect our cultural dignity, with the overarching goal of promoting the socio-cultural and economic development of the Tamang community. Through this collective effort, we envision a future where Tamang heritage is preserved and celebrated globally.
Membership in the Tamang Society of America is open to all individuals of Tamang origin who agree to abide by the organization’s By-Laws and membership policies. Additionally, an Honorary Membership is available for individuals—regardless of ethnicity—who share our values and support the mission of the Society.
